Bobby Watson / Start: 9:30 pm*

Bobby Watson, a versatile artist known as a saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator, hails from Kansas City, Kansas. Trained at the distinguished University of Miami jazz program, he earned his musical prowess as the musical director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Following a notable tenure with the Jazz Messengers, Watson collaborated with various renowned artists, playing a supporting role for both instrumentalists and vocalists.

Watson founded the Horizon quintet, acclaimed for its modern twist, recording for Blue Note and Columbia labels. His extensive discography includes the highly praised "Love Remains" (1986) and subsequent releases on the Palmetto label. A prolific composer, Watson's works, such as "Time Will Tell" and "In Case You Missed It," have become jazz classics.

Aside from his performing career, Watson is a respected educator, inspiring younger generations. His teaching journey began in the mid-1980s, and he later became the first endowed chair at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. In 2010, Watson embarked on an ambitious project, the seven-part "Gates BBQ Suite," showcasing his students' talents.

This suite, deeply rooted in Watson's personal experiences, achieved recognition on the National Jazz Airplay chart. His commitment to education extended to a Japan tour, providing students with a unique performance opportunity. Watson's impact continues as he shares his talents globally, balancing teaching and performances at major venues worldwide.
